Khởi đầu từ festival quy tụ các ban nhạc của Đức vào năm 1990. Dần dần Wacken Open Air được mở rộng quy mô với sự tham gia của các ban nhạc hàng đầu của Châu Âu, Bắc Mỹ, Australia. Dấu ấn là vào năm 1998 với sự góp mặt của 73 ban nhạc metal hàng đầu, Wacken Open Air trở thành festival metal lớn nhất hành tinh. Bất cứ rockfans, metalheads nào cũng mơ được một ngày tham dự festival này.
